Course Loads

Undergraduate Course Load Policy

Fall and Spring Sessions 

  • Suggested full-time course load is 15-16 semester hours.
  • Additional tuition is charged for 17 or more hours in fall and spring semesters.
  • Minimum course load for full-time undergraduate status during the fall and spring semester is 12 semester hours; the minimum course load for full-time graduate status during the fall or spring semester is 9 semester hours.
  • Students on academic probation may not take more than 13 semester hours.
  • Approval by dean of major is required to register for more than 18 semester hours.

Winter Session

  • Only 3 semester hours may be taken during winter semester.

    Summer Sessions 

    • Except in special circumstances, the maximum course load for combined summer sessions is 15 semester hours.
    • Only 3 semester hours may be taken during summer intersession.
    • A maximum of 6 semester hours may be taken in any summer session.
    • Minimum course load for full-time undergraduate status during the summer semester is 9 semester hours; the minimum course load for full-time graduate status during the summer semester is 5 semester hours. For financial aid purposes the minimum course load for full-time undergraduate students during the summer semester is 12 semester hours; the minimum course load for full-time graduate students during the summer semester is 9 hours.
    • Students on academic probation may not take more that 6 semester hours during the summer sessions.
    • Approval by dean of major is required to register for more than 15 semester hours.

    Note: It is expected that students will spend 5-6 hours per week in course-related work outside of class time in a 3-semester hour course. This means students carrying 15 semester hours may need to spend a minimum of 40-45 hours per week of study outside of class per week
